The Getty Research Institute announces Tavares Strachan as the next artist to join the Getty as a Guest Scholar for 2019-2020 in fall of 2019 through Summer of 2020. Tavares Strachan will receive a fellowship from the GRI to continue his research related to an ongoing epic project regarding the nature of invisibility, questioning institutionalized cultural knowledge while unearthing critical narratives and histories obscured from our public imaginary. The anchor of this project is Strachan’s creation of an Encyclopedia of Invisibility.
“For me, an encyclopedia is a fundamental paradox: the premise of it is it’s a place where most knowledge will be kept. So, we just went through the process of looking and seeing what has been left out of encyclopedias to examine how cultures are really constructed... I ended up working on a project having to do with this idea, where we create our own encyclopedia, amassing the nonentities and giving them somewhere to go. So, [the] work [is] finding a place for these nonentities..Invisibility..... Nonentities. Things that might not have a fully formed shape or are part of a larger cultural conversation....” -Tavares Strachan

From navigation, to gathering information and all forms of communication, digital devices have become integral to every activity. Technology provides the ultimate convenience while simultaneously registering our every move. In the recent past we were defined by our race, profession, religion and what we consumed. Today our digital activity and how we portray ourselves through social media, creates a virtual identity which is mined by tech firms. David Edwards will lead a conversation asking how do we take advantage of the conveniences afforded by digital technology without sacrificing our privacy?
Along with our co-founder, David Edwards, Doug Aitken, inaugural Frontier Art Prize winner (2017), will take part in a unique art event: New Horizon. This multifaceted art event that challenges the notion of art in the 21st-century. The project is composed of a series of live events across the state of Massachusetts, centered around a stunning reflective hot air balloon and gondola.
One of the great American mythologies is the road trip. New Horizon is a 21st century version of a journey, traveling through the landscape by air. The project is composed of a series of live events across the state of Massachusetts. At each stop the mirror balloon touches down becomes a happening. It is both an artwork and an event where ideas, conversation, music and art are shared. The journey creates a continuous, flowing event, encountering unique individuals and providing an insight into the future of our culture.
NEW HORIZON IS AN UNPREDICTABLE PROJECT.

Tavares Strachan, 2018 Frontier Art Prize recipient, joined SpaceX to launch sculpture honoring fallen astronaut
Strachan’s Enoch sculpture, a canopic jar structure, launched on Monday, December 3, to honor astronaut Robert Henry Lawrence Jr.. Lawrence should have been the first African American in space, but died at the age of 32 in a jet crash. By creating this unusual satellite in the form of a 24-karat gold urn, Strachan symbolically sent Lawrence into space. Strachan was one of the first artists selected to participate in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)’s Art + Technology lab, in 2014. At the same time, he began a collaboration with SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. Shotwell spoke live from her office about SpaceX’s partnership with Strachan during this year’s World Frontiers Forum. To read more about this fascinating project, see this New York Times article as well as the LACMA’s press release.
